About Rice Awareness Month:
The month of November is declared as the NATIONAL RICE AWARENESS MONTH to sustain the legacy of the 2004 International Year of Rice (IYR). The IYR promotes improved production and access to rice, which feeds more than half the world's population while providing income for millions of rice producers, processors and traders.
This proclamation coincides with the anniversary of the Philippine Rice Research Institute which was created in November, 1985.
As PhilRice turns 25 on November 5, 2010, we believe in Rice Science for Development as we focus on attaining and sustaining rice self-sufficiency, reducing the incidence of poverty and malnutrition, and achieving competitiveness in agricultural science and technology.
This year, the creative theme is “weRICE” to represent our collective soul as a nation shaped by rice, since birth, across islands and generations. WeRICE corresponds to the core messages of this year’s celebration – weRICE to be rice self-sufficient, weRICE to Save Rice, Save Lives.
Meanwhile, "The Future is Bright, The Future is Rice" is an optimistic theme for 2009 which aims to introduce students to the various opportunities in rice farming as well as other social and agro-industrial ventures. By enhancing awareness on the business of rice farming and production, the current crop of students will include farming and agriculture in their career options, not because they don’t have a choice, but because there is a future in rice.
